Compassion naturally gives rise to tolerance and forgiveness. It allows us to appreciate that even someone we think of as an enemy is a human being with a right to be happy. Your enemy can be your best teacher because he or she teaches the possibility of unconditional compassion.

The people that I fear are those who lack compassion.
So true
I don’t fear them. A better word is pity.
Thank you, I appreciate the reminder about this teaching. I am in a share-housing situation where I am being tested to exercise compassion for someone highly unlikeable at the moment. I wouldn’t say they are my enemy, but actively training in compassion is the main thing that’s helping me to let go of aversion to their deeply unpleasant behaviour.
